Typography

I picked out this font because of the fact that is is slightly distorted in relation to the fact that there curved parts. Because of this, I though it could represent the fact that our character is not normal and doesn't quite fit in.

As the name suggests, this font is very urban and modern. Because of our young target audience, it would appeal to them because it is modern. Also, the target audience would be males and this would appeal to them because it is bold and doesn't have any connotations of femininity (like elegance)

Because one of the main themes in our film is rebellion, we thought it fitting to incorporate this into the font. Spray paint is linked to graffiti which, by some, is likened to vandalism and criminal activity. However, this font would be more effective if it was bolder.

With most fonts in films, we noticed that they are usually quite bold. Therefore, this would be effective because it is bold and is quite masculine. It would appeal to our primary audience because because they are male and would prefer a font that reflects their gender as they can notice that it is aimed for them.

This font has connotations of sci-fi movies which would appeal to our primary audience as they usually appeal to males. However, because of this it may be confusing for the audience as our chosen genre is not Sci-Fi. Also it is too dramatic for the credited names because the font is so large.

This font is both modern and bold which would capture the attention of our teenage male primary audience but also our secondary audience (females of the same age). This is because it is not wholly feminine or masculine. This gender neutral font excludes no gender so will have a wider appeal, therefore increasing the popularity of the film,

We decided to go with Octin Spraypaint because we thought it reflected the theme of rebellion the best. This will make it easier for our audience to guess what the whole film will be about and therefore increase its appeal.

Filming Diary

First Filming (2nd December)
In our first attempt in filming we filmed a few walking scenes, the wanted poster scene and one of the scenes at school. We encountered a few problems, like people walking into the frame. Therefore, we had to repeat the scene a few times.

After filming, we realised that the time was wrong because our film is supposed to be set in the morning. Therefore. we had to re-film this scene.

Props, Location, Fashion, Risk assessment planning

Sound Planning

These are some of the songs we came across whilst trying to pick one for our opening sequence. Because our opening features very little dialogue, we wanted to use dubstep as it is more fast paced that other types of music so it will create more audience interest and give a nice flow to the opening.

This song was particularly good because it has a nice beat and rhythm to it. However, after the drop in the music, the song sounds very different and doesn't have the tune that we liked. Therefore, to use this song, we would have to cut these bits out.

This song has a good rhythm and pace throughout. It's quite sad sounding so would fit well because we want to create a depressing atmosphere.

Again, we liked this song because its quite sad but at the same time it is thoroughly interesting.

This song was really good because it was very faced paced which we need for our opening to make it interesting. However, it may be too upbeat for what we are looking for.

This song would be great to use as it is quite slow at the beginning and gets faster as the song progresses, which reflects the fact that our character is waking up and getting on with the day.

After looking at all of these songs, we decided that dance songs would not be the best fit because it deters from the sombre atmosphere we want to create. Therefore, we decided to use a song from Bensound called 'Slow Motion' because it was very sad but also had upbeat undertones so it would remain interesting. Also, this is the music that is usually featured in films so it is more conventional.

Character Profile

Learning Comment:
Creating an audience profile was beneficial for the characterisation of our protagonist as it enabled us to pinpoint his personality so this can be showcased in our opening

Audience Profile

Learning Comment:
By creating an audience profile, it has allowed me to realise what my audience will actually be therefore, in turn, I can ensure that I can make the content appeal to them

Storyboarding and Shot Lists

This is our first draft of the storyboard that maps out what our opening sequence will look like.

Thinking of a concept/final idea

Doing this task allowed us to collate our ideas and form a concept that we were both happy with. It also enabled us to eliminate ideas that would not work. We also brain stormed locations and decided whereabouts we could actually film it to make it easier for ourselves later on in the making of our opening.

We have adapted our idea as we do not have the equipment to insure that the lighting will be up to a good standard inside, so we will mostly be filming outdoors.

Preliminary Task

180 degree rule- you don't go over the 180 degree line when filming. This can make it look like the characters are looking at each other and engaging in conversation.

Shot/Reverse Shot- a technique used to make it look like the characters are looking at each other. POV shots or over the shoulder shots are used typically in this.

Match on action-  An editing technique for continuity portraying the action on the subject in the first shot

Representation In Films

Powered by emaze

Learning Comment:
Social groups are represented in a number of different ways. The use of setting is particularly effective in establishing the social group as they are mainly set in a high school and teenagers are the ones to be there. Also, sound is particularly effective when it comes to showing what the characters personality is like- for example heavy music is used when the character is supposed to be bad whereas light, soft music is used when the character is nice. Moreover, clothing is also useful in portraying what the character is like- for example dark clothing suggests that the character is evil, simplistic clothing connotes that they are innocent and good and short, tight clothing usually suggests that they are popular and self absorbed. Fast paced jolty editing displays elements of chaos which would be associated with a character who is rebellious and possibly bad.

Narrative Structure

Learning Comment:
what I need to include:

  • A clear villain, helper and villain shown. These are usually introduced in the opening (Propp's character theory)
  • An equilibrium and disruption of equilibrium. I need to introduce something that will cause havoc with the previously peaceful storyline (Todorov's Equilibrium theory)
  • Show binary opposites in my opening (Levi-Strauss) to show that there will be conflict between these two opposites and engage the audience.

Analyse Previous Students Work

Learning Comment:
I think that the use of point of view shots to show the characters view point would be effective in creating more empathy towards the character and to gain insight into their private thoughts and feelings. This could be accompanied with a voice over/monologue to show their private thoughts. I also think that zooming in on parts of the setting would be effective in setting the scene and therefore would enable me to show if the place the characters are in are dangerous or in fact are nice without having to set up an elaborate set. Music is very effective in the construction of a narrative as it shows the situation of the character and whether the situation they are in is negative of positive. The text can also suggest what the genre of film is so therefore I would probably use bright colours in mine to show that it has elements of comedy featured in it.
For my own video I need to:

  • Make sure that the music represents what is happening- for example using sad music in an emotional scene
  • Use camera angles that give hints on what may happen in the scene - for example POV shots to show that the character is searching for something
  • Credit all the conventional people in the opening in an interesting way so that the audience is thoroughly engaged- I could do this by using dramatic music and showing the most important people on a black background to that the audience is not distracted by the setting and the dramatic music would make the audience interested.
  • I also need to find a setting that is appropriate for what I am doing- this could simply be set in a school or a place that teenagers are typically shown to hang out at

Audience Research

I used the website 'Canva' to present my survey findings on a poster

Create your own user feedback survey

Learning Comment:
Overall, this task has helped my gain insight into what people actually like in a film and this can be applied to when I make my own opening sequences as I know what themes make an audience attracted to a film and what ones deter them from watching it. Moreover, the question about camera angles was particularly helpful in terms of responses as it has given my ideas about the initial shots I could take to really engage my audience and make it interesting to them- the responses showed a number of people like close ups as it make it obvious who the main character is and gives away parts of their personality which makes them relatable from early on. I have also come to the conclusion that to combat audiences not paying attention to the opening I could start with a really dramatic scene and then add in a black background with credits so that the audience is paying attention to the action but at times can only focus on the credits. Because the majority of the audience of coming of age films were female, I think choosing a female protagonist in my opening would be wise as it makes it more relatable for the audience majority.
